Ben McEwan started his career in visual effects in 2008 in Australia. In an impressive start to a career in our industry, he began by singlehandedly completing the visual effects for a local television series while also gaining the opportunity to work as an on-set VFX supervisor.
He transitioned to work on the vendor side of the industry, first at Animal Logic as roto and compositing support on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and then at Rising Sun Pictures, where he worked his way up to compositor, contributing to films such as The Great Gatsby, Gravity, Prometheus, and The Hunger Games.
Ben relocated to Vancouver in 2014 to begin work at Method Studios on Maze Runner before joining Image Engine to contribute to a number of projects including Chappie, Straight Outta Compton, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Jurassic World.
After his time at Image Engine, Ben took on increasingly senior roles at studios such as Double Negative, Industrial Light & Magic, OATS Studios, and Umedia on such shows as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War, and The Meg.
In 2018, Ben returned to Image Engine to work on Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald as a compositor before being promoted to lead on Pokemon Detective Pikachu and the first season of The Mandalorian. He was then promoted again to compositing supervisor for Image Engine’s contributions to The Old Guard and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Soon after, Ben McEwan became head of the compositing department in 2021. In this role, Ben guides the operation and improvement of the compositing team by defining the overall vision for current and future processes, and setting and maintaining department standards.
