A whole host of visual effects companies worked on Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence, helping the director destroy new cities with even bigger alien spaceships and scarier creatures. Here at One Perfect Shot we’ve asked several visual effects supervisors from those companies about some of their most challenging scenes to work on from the film.

Martyn Culpitt, visual effects supervisor, Image Engine: There was also one really epic sequence, dubbed the ‘Escape’. Here the film’s heroes find themselves atop a huge platform within the Mothership. We created the entire environment as a full-CG asset. It was a huge build – roughly 1.5km (nearly 1 mile) in diameter. It included most things that you see, from the alien fighter ships, to the full control tower housing the aliens, to the massive alien columns in the background that give the scene real scale. We composited the actors, who acted against blue screen, into this environment.
